The Commen Raven or the larger-bodied member of the genus Corvus does not migrate from Canmore but instead takes up a winter home at the local McDonald’s restaurants parking lot. They greet you when you place your order as is done in the above photo. They guard over the garbage bins just like the Bears once did in the back alleys of Banff. The presence of the common ravens at the Tower of London is believed to protect the Crown and the Tower. So there must be some truth to it as the Common Raven is the official bird of the Yukon and of the city of Yellowknife, NWT, Canada.
In the Hebrew Bible, Genesis 8:7 shows the raven as the first bird released from the ArK and in Kings 17:4 God commands the ravens to feed the prophet Elijah.
In the new testament as well, ravens are used by Jesus as an illustration of God’s provision in Luke 12:24.
In the Qur’an’s version of the story of Cain and Abel, the two sons of Adam, a raven is mentioned as the creature who taught Cain how to bury his murdered brother, in Al-Ma’ida 5:31.
So the Raven lives on through the winter with Big Mac’s and French Fries right here in Canmore and maybe, righteously so!
